Gujarat NRE Coke,
as a responsible corporate citizen has always made conscious
efforts to employ environment friendly practices and energy
conservation measures. It set up two Wind Turbine Generators
of 1.25 MW each, one in 2004 and the other in 2005, totaling
to a capacity of 2.5 MW. These WTGs set up in Gujarat will
be used for captive usage. It is now setting up another wind
farm with 20 wind turbine generators of 1.25 MW each, aggregating
to 25 MW in Kutch, Gujarat which is expected to be operational
early 2006. The Green Energy generated from this unit will
be primarily used for consumption at steel plant which will
start operations in December 2005. Apart from this, the company
has also taken steps for cogeneration of power from the waste
heat of its chimneys.
The
windfarms will lead to substantial savings in energy cost
of the company. GNCL will also benefit from the Carbon Credit
through Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) under the Kyoto
Protocol Agreement. The emphasis on using renewable sources
of energy will not only reduce wastages but also minimise
stress on fossil fuels.
