FRESH from bailing out the Wollongong Hawks basketball team, India-based coal king Arun Kumar Jagatramka's put his company's sponsorship funds in a more familiar direction: cricket. Coal producer Gujarat NRE, which is ASX listed, will reportedly be stumping up about $200,000 a year for three years to sponsor all of Cricket NSW's under-age state teams and programs. In addition, they will become the naming rights partner and major sponsor of the Cricket NSW Indoor Cricket Centre at the Sydney Cricket Ground. The sponsorship will start on July 1.

Gujarat NRE owns and operates the NRE No.1 Colliery (formerly known as South Bulli Colliery) and the NRE Wongawilli Colliery (formerly BHP's Elouera Colliery), close to Wollongong. Earlier this year, Jagatramka gave each of the players and coaches of the Hawks, NBL runners-up last year after nearly going under previously, 5000 rights convertible to Gujarat shares in December at zero cost. It's not been exciting yet because the shares are about 65c compared with the December level of 70c, but we haven't heard any complaints.
